Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The Cathedral was decorated with military flags, and like many other places around the country, there were men dressed in army gear as a reminder of the men who went off to fight.
The music was
Canticles: Byrd Short
A classic. My favourite part is the shift from C major to C minor in the Magnificat, the part where the sopranos jump almost an octave.
Anthem: Cantate Domino by Pitoni
Short and sweet. Perhaps 50 seconds of music? But lovely interplay between the parts with the “Exlutent!” fanfare.
Evensong was shorter so we could have the commemoration at 6pm. We heard the last post and then heard a dispatches reading about the first day of the battle.
